Joe Ellis Biography

My love affair with basketball started at the age of 8 on the school yards and playgrounds of West Oakland. I spent most of my available free time playing basketball at DeFermery Park and the Oakland Boys Club. I attended McClymonds High School, which had one of the most celebrated basketball programs in the in the State of California. The McClymonds Warriors basketball team won the Tournament of Champions held at the University of California 8 years in a row. My 2 years of varsity play I was chosen to the All Tournament Team and my senior year 1962 I was chosen Tournament Most Valuable Player. I was also chosen to first team All City Teams, and Northern California Player of the year 1962. During this 8 year winning streak, the McClymonds High Warriors won 110 out of 111 games. This program was instrumental in helping players move on to major universities as well as to the professional ranks. Some of the players that attended McClymonds High that played in the National Basketball Association are: Bill Russell, Paul Silas, Joe Ellis, Nate Williams, and Antonio Davis.

My college career was spent at the University of San Francisco, and it was just as rewarding as my high school career. During my college career I was once again fortunate to have very talented teammates that made this Don's team one of the best in the nation. We were ranked nationally during the 1963-64 and 1964-65 seasons. During this time UCLA was the top team in the nation. We played them twice in the Western Regional Finals and lost both times with a loss margin of less than 8 points. UCLA went on to win the National title, beating most teams by larger margins than the 2 wins over the Dons. I achieved All Conference status all of my years as a varsity player, as well as Northern California Player of the Year. I was also All American Honorable mention. I was one of 4 juniors chosen in 1965 to represent the United States in the World Games held in Budapest, Hungary. We traveled Europe for approximately 4 weeks with stops in Finland, Sweden, and Prague the Czech Republic. This team had some of the best college players in the nation: Bill Bradley, Billy Cunningham. Fred Hetzel, Tom and Dick Van Arsdale, Lou Hudson, Ollie Johnson, Henry Finkel. Joe Ellis. Nine of the twelve players on this team went on to play in the NBA. I also was chosen to play in the East/West College All Star Game.

When my college career was over I was chosen in the second round of the NBA Draft by the San Francisco Warriors/Golden State Warriors. I was the 13th player chosen over all in the 1966 draft. During my NBA career I had the pleasure of playing with some of the most recognizable players in NBA history: Nate Thurmond, Rick Barry, Cazzie Russell, Al Attles, Jeff Mullins, Jerry Lucas, and many more. My 8 years in the NBA was one of the most rewarding times of my life. I played against all of the NBA Legends; Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlin, Bill Russell, K.C. Jones, Lou Hudson, Billy Cunningham, Dave Bing, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Gus Johnson, Guy Rodgers, Jerry Sloan, Phil Jackson, Oscar Robertson, just to name a few.
